Once upon a time, due to the lack of a local shop, the corner of the pool room became a selling place for fresh local vegetables. This ''service'' grew to ordering meat for our customers too!
Eventually the locals decided it would be good to have a shop back again after a break of 25 years.
Thanks to the Countryside Agency, grants became available to build one, with community help.
Unfortunately, there was nowhere else in the village to site the shop other than the beer garden of the pub!
Hence we became one of the first villages to incorporate a pub and a shop The shop is owned and manned by volunteers and has no connection to the pub, other than when we do our ''volunteer bit'' which means we make sure everyone''s got a beer then go and serve in the shop!
It''s quite an attractive little building with a verandah and stunning views over Dartmoor...
The shop stocks most of the basic needs, but specialises in local products, especially the meat from the same butcher who supplies the Bell. Hence, if you like what you have just eaten in the pub, you can buy some to take home!
Currently, the shop stocks free range eggs (so close to us that you could wave to the chickens!)
The above mentioned ''harmonic'' meat and meat products, local dairy stuff, home made jams, marmalades, chutney'' and pickles. It also provides opportunities for local artists to showcase their work.
