New Year 1994 brought the shock announcement that the Shop/Post Office was to close because of financial problems.
Villagers immediately set up an action group and within two weeks, with the agreement of the Building Society which had foreclosed on the mortgage, were trading (in a very limited way) from the existing premises. If we had not recommenced trading within 2 weeks of closure we would have lost our customers to the competition and never reopened.
Within 3 months we had rented, on a twelve month lease prior to redevelopment, an under-used part of a local Garden equipment shops about 25% the size of the original store.
Post Office Counters could not have been more supportive in spite of the fact that as a Post Office, it was barely viable. Even given the somewhat bizarre surrounding we won over the local Environmental Health Officer and were able to trade from this site for about a year which is the time we took to find and secure a more permanent temporary home – The Village Hall car park and a Portakabin!
During this time we had been seeking a permanent site for the shop, either an existing building, of which there were about six potential locations, or a new purpose built shop. This involved extensive local fund raising events, mention is almost every newspaper from the Financial Times to Country Life, multitudinous radio and TV interviews and much lobbying of grants providers. Eventually £50k was raised especially by sale of shares in the venture.
The politics of existing sites ruled them out and we eventually moved into new premises in time for the Christmas trade in 1997. These premises are capable of being converted to a dwelling should the worst happen so ensuring residual asset value.
We have doubled the turnover in six years and generate surplus income over expenditure for village projects.
